I don't usually take joy in the misfortune of others especially when it is centered around a group of college kids that just want to play basketball, but when I read that Isiah Thomas' Florida International University basketball team was beaten this week by NAIA Northwood, I had to smile.

This off-season for college basketball fans was one of the toughest in recent memory. Scandals, coaches in trouble and basketball teams fighting football teams all marred the sport.

Probably biggest of these scandals to me was the Rick Pitino scandal where he was allegedly being blackmailed by a former lover with whom he allegedly had an extra-marital affair. Pitino was always one of those guys who seemed to do everything right, at the college level at least, and when he became front page news, it was a real shock to many.

Its been since the 95-96 season since the Universtiy of Kentucky has gone into a season with such high expectations.  That year UK had more than a few eventual NBA players on its roster and went on to win their 6th NCAA Championship, which to be honest, would have been a huge disappointment if they had not won. Going into the 2009-2010 season, UK has almost those same expectations.  If it was just the return of PF Patrick Patterson, the potential rise of promising sophomore SF/SG Darius Miller and the incoming freshman of PG Eric Bledsoe and C Daniel Orton, it would be safe to say UK was in for a good season.  However, with the huge commitment of C/PF DeMarcus Cousins and more importantly, due to Patterson's return, is that of John Calipari's landing of the number one rated PG John Wall, UK is preparing for a year for the ages.

When Michigan State shocked Louisville last Sunday, college basketball fans around the country had to take notice. The Big Ten, which was supposed to be having another down year, had sent its eighth team to the Final Four since 2000. Maybe this conference wasn't as bad as some people thought?

Dana Altman and his Creighton Blue Jays probably had nightmares last night about falling bricks.

Creighton had its second round NIT game with Kentucky all but wrapped up. All they had to do was make their free throws. And that's where things went off track.

             Which conference will get the most teams in, and which ones will be on the outside looking in in 2009? It looks to be a good year for the mid-major conferences and their tournament hopes this year. Only two power conferences are flexing their muscle this year, while the others are stumbling and beating each other up in conference. The ACC and Big East are looking strong, while down years in the SEC, Big 12, and PAC 10 are creating a jumble of mediocre looking teams with no true leaders.

In a great weekend of Pac 10 hoops I must give out my pick for the Pac 10 POTW, Taylor Rochestie.

Taylor led the Cougs to back to back road wins agains Oregon State University (in Overtime) and Oregon in his last visit to "Mack" Court. In these two games Rochestie tallied 44 points and 15 assists (both weekend high's for the Pac) while playing a pac 10 high 84 minutes of solid point guard play. He tied a WSU single game record for free-throws going 16 for 16 from the stripe against Oregon and reached a career milestone while in Corvallis where he eclipsed the 1,000 point mark. Surely his performance should be rewarded with the Player of the Week honor. So, if there is any justice in the world, the powers that be will AT LEAST honor him with an honorable mention for Player of the Week.

It was a classic Big East meets ACC battle as number two Duke welcomed number twelve Georgetown to Durham, NC on Saturday, January 17th.  The traditional basketball powerhouses put on an impressive showing as Cameron rocked and rolled with its usual mix of energy and Cameron Crazy creativity.  The match-up of Greg Monroe of Georgetown and Gerald Henderson of Duke was clearly the most highly anticipated match-up of the season, as the freshman phenom was heavily recruited by Coach K.  However, Duke's power and experience proved to be too much for the Hoyas as Duke rolled to victory with a final score of 76 to 67.

Marquette vs. Tennessee, or: Is it fun to watch a game between two gimmicky ranked teams who aren’t going to go very far in the ncaa tournament because they are so gimmicky?            Marquette and Tennessee have one thing in common: all of their players on their given team seem the same. But it’s for different reasons.Jerel McNeal, Dominic James and Wesley Matthews have been playing forever. I remember looking at the ncaa west regional three, maybe four years ago and picking Marquette with Steve Novak and Dominic James(kicking himself daily for not leaving for the NBA after his freshman year) to get to the final four. This was when I thought the way to win a bracket was to pick one wild card in a region to distinguish yourself from the pack. Then they lost in the first round. Then I changed my philosophy. It seems like Marquette has 6-year scholarship guards with an interchangeable big man each season that isn’t very big.

Shonn Greene for the Heisman!  Is anyone with me?  Ok, I won't get that extreme, because I, along with other knowledgable college football fans, know that Sam Bradford should run away with the award.  Bradford's TD/Int Ratio has him as the front-runner for the Heisman, not to mention the fact that he's on a championship contending team.  It seems like that is the only thing voters are going to be caring to look for this year.  As I believe that Bradford should win, I believe that he is the only player who should be ahead of Shonn Greene.

Hello!  I just wanted to take this time and introduce myself to anyone reading this...

I'm a 22-year old graduate of the University of Maryland-College Park (GO TERPS!) and while there I was the Assistant Sports Director at the campus radio station, WMUC.  The time I spent at WMUC was amazing, as I was able to be a play-by-play announcer for numerous ACC Football, Basketball and Baseball games.  Play-by-play announcing is what I've wanted to do for many years now, and the excellent journalism program at Maryland was the main reason why I attended the university.  If you are at all interested, you can listen to my play-by-play demos at my "official" website: www.ScottSudikoff.com.

So I normally title my Monday blog: Monday Mourning due to being hungover from a full day of drinking and watching sports, hence the “mourning” because I have to get up, go to work, puke in the bathroom, and subsequently fall asleep in all of my meetings and get absolutely no work done. But today is different, mainly due to the fact that CBS’s and Fox’s regional coverage of NFL games in my area was HORRIBLE. Games that had a spread of +11 with no fantasy implications at all were being aired, so I went and watched polo (you know, the sport where guys on horses trot around and whack a ball with mallets). I had never been to a polo game before but we decided to go due to the possibility of attractive females (there are always beautiful women at horse events). We mingled with a few and made up some elaborate lies that we were just checking out the competition and had our horses stabled a few miles away. We were obviously out of place, with our cheers of “nice pass man!” and “shoooooot it!” but we wholeheartedly plan on attending it every Sunday for the rest of the season – pending what NFL games are on of course.

Last year's NBA draft was easy as a Sonics fan.  Take either Durant or Oden, whoever was left.  This year however, it’s a whole new ball game.  As soon as it was announced the Sonics would have the fourth pick in this draft I thought “what does that mean?”  Now, I'm not stupid, I understand what having the fourth pick means, I just didn't know what that would get them.
